The 55th recipient of the Heisman Trophy was a gifted passing quarterback from the University of Houston. Andre Ware is the first Cougar to win the Heisman Trophy. In his first 10 games of 1989, Andre completed 329 passes in 516 attempts for 4,299 yards and 44 touchdowns. Against arch-rival Texas, he hurled 4 TD passes to secure the 47 to 9 victory. Against Texas Tech, he completed 37 passes for 475 yards and 4 TDs. As a sophomore, he passed for 25 TDs to set a Southwest Conference record, giving up only 8 interceptions. Andre was a first round draft choice for Detroit in 1990 and most recently played for the Berlin Thunder of the NFL Europe League. Ware retired from football in 1999 due to a shoulder injury.
